The Confrontation

"The Confrontation"by Raymond Barrio and "The Fight" by Richard WRight have very similar events and also different events. Both these stories have a good lesson to teach people about confronting someone in regular basis. Many people react differently to confrontations. Some get nervous, some get angry quickly ,some just start to fight some are scared. No matter how or when it takes place ,in life we are going to have to confront someone about something one day. In this case both characters had to confront someone and they both did it some how the same and different.

In the story "The Fight" the narrator of the story is going to start in a new high school and he was nervous about getting bullied or someone trying to start a fight with him. He was right when he went to school a group of kids started talking to him in a sarcastic way trying to see how he reacts to it. "Take back what you said," the boy challenged me. "Make me," I said. The crowd howled, sensing a fight. The boy hesitated, weighing his chances of beating me. "You ain't gonna take what that new boy said, is you?" someone taunted the boy. The boy came close. I stood my ground. Our faces were four inches apart. "You think I'm scared of you, don't you?" he asked. "I told you what I think," I said. Somebody, eager and afraid that we would not fight, pushed the boy, and be bumped into me. I shoved him away violently. "Don't push me!" the boy said. "Then keep off me!" I said. I think that the narrator took his actions the right way because if he wouldn't have stood up to the group of boys then he would still bother him, and because of this incident they didn't want to bother him anymore. "The Confrontation" was similar to the story "The Fight" because in "The Confrontation" there was a man named Manual who was a working in a farm with apricots and there was a foreigner whom wanted to take mostly half of everything that the men there where getting for there hard and man. This foreigner Morales wanted two cents out of everyone bucket and everyone one was opposed to it but wouldn't talk back to him except manual he told this man that came out of no where that it was not right to come out of no where and ask everyone that is working hard to give him each ever two dollars from there pocket when he wasn't doing anything. Once Manual brought him to his scenes he realized what he was trying to do was wrong. Here is an example from the story, Whenever Roberto Morales spoke, Manuel had to force himself not to answer. He had to keep his temper from flaring. "Now," announced Morales at last, in his friendliest tone. "Now. I must take two cents from every bucket. I am sorry. There was a miscalculation. Everybody understands. Everybody?" He slid his eyes around, smiling, palms up. The tired, exhausted pickers gasped as one. Yes. Everyone understood. Freezing in place. After all that hard work. "Any questions, men?" Morales grinned, knowing everyone realized that he had the upper hand, that that would mean a loss of two or three dollars out of each picker's pay that day, a huge windfall for Morales. "You promised to take nothing!" Manuel heard himself saying. Everyone turned in astonishment to stare at Manuel. "I said two cents, hombre. You got a problem or what?" "You promised." The two men, centered in a huge ring of red-ringed eyes, glared at each other. Reaching for each others jugular. The other exhausted animals studied the tableau through widening eyes. It was so unequal. Morales remained calm, confident, studying Manuel. As though memorizing his features. He had the whole advantage. Then, with his last remaining energy, Manuel lifted his foot and clumsily tipped over his own last bucket of cots. They rolled away in all directions around everyone's feet. Roberto Morales' eyes blazed. His fists clenched. "You pick them up, Gutierrez." So. He knew his name. After all. For answer, Manuel kicked over another bucket, and again the fruit rolled away in all directions. Then an astonishing thing happened. All the other pickers moved toward their own buckets still standing beside them on the ground awaiting the truck gatherer, and took an ominous position over them, straddling their feet over them. Without looking around, without taking his eyes off Manuel, Roberto Morales said sharply, "All right. All right, men. I shall take nothing this time." The difference between both of these stories is that "The Fight" there was a physical fight in this story and very harsh verbal words also but in the story "The Confrontation" there was only verbal talking no one hit no one and in the end they settled everything down.

In conclusion I think both of these stories sent a clear message about how people try and defend them selves different types of ways. Both these stories showed the physical way to confront someone and also the verbal none violent way. These stories showed me that in a confrontation you have to be careful because you never know what kind of person you will confront especially if your going to physically fight you never know if the other person has a weapon. chrissym_92@hotmail.com
