In the story "Dead End" the young girl Maria was a senior in High School and she lived with her father and little brother and sister. Her mother unfortunately passed away not so long ago. Maria's mother wouldn't have been able to go away in peace if maria hadn't promise her that she would continue going to school, this promise made maria think twice about frankie because she was afraid to break her mothers promise. Maria was basically the woman of the house , she was trying to keep everything together because ever since her mother passed everything changed especially her father. In school Maria thought Frankie was cute he was a student in her school but she felt to busy with school and home that she didn't have time to fall in love specially with a hansom guy that hung out with the most popular kids from school. Although Maria knew Frankie liked her because he would always look at her she didn't do anything but she wanted to. One day frankie just stopped by her house and they both went for a ride in his car. Frankie was being very open with Maria and he kissed and also he asked for her to smoke a joint and maria didn't want to but she felt pressured to because she was afraid he would leave her. so she said no because of he mothers promise and also because of the tale of "The llorona".This story was about a woman who fell in love with a guy who had money and they got married had two children and after that the guy left and she got frustrated at her kids so she drowned them now she goes around crying looking for her kids.

Maria was afraid to turn into that woman so she told him hat her study's is more important then some guy. luckily for maria he accepted that because she wasn't like all the other girls and he liked that fact about Maria so in the end he respected her decision and still kept seeing her. I agree with Maria's choice because she wanted to make her mother happy and she did want o break that promise she made. Maria's main issue when she sees that Frankie is very persistent she thinks about The Llorona and how that myth went down she does not want to end up like that. I think maria is a very wise young lady because there is a lot of problems with girls now that is doing things they shouldnt and forget about there family and there education just like the crew she wanted to join but she was smart enough to think about it more.

Empathy is very important in this story because when Maria felt as though she could be those pretty rebel girls she analyzed how her family would feel like her mother especially because she made a big promise hat would let her mother down and her siblings so she felt forced to make it happen.so she feel empathy for her family and herself also. I think empathy in someone is important in everyone's life becauseu might take rational choices in life and not drastic ones. Also envy is important in the story to because this is what Maria felt for the young girls in the crew in which she wanted to join. Maria felt this envy towards them because she didn't know why she had to be so obedient and not be bad like everyone else. I disagree with Maria because if anyone had to envy it was the crew because she was going the right path and the were going down hill as the story says.

The symbol in this story is that Maria felt trapped because of this myth of The Llorona and she didn't want to become like this woman because of her selfish desires she wanted to be better and never put a guy before her family or even herself so the whole point that the story is trying to say is that she doesnt want to become lonley and wound up going crazy because the man she loves doesn't lover her.
